South Africa’s President Ramaphosa Appoints Mcebisi Jonas as Special Envoy Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has named Mcebisi Jonas, the former Deputy Finance Minister, as a special envoy to the United States to mend the troubled diplomatic ties. This appointment was made public on April 14th by President Ramaphosa amid ongoing conflicts between the two countries due to recent diplomatic and economic issues. Jonas has been tasked with promoting South Africa’s diplomatic goals, trade interests, and bilateral relations in the U.S.

In President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement regarding Jonas’ new role, he highlighted the need to restore relations founded on respect and strategic collaboration. The relationship between South Africa and the U. S. has worsened since Donald Trump was re-elected in January 2025. In February, Trump halted U.S. financial support to South Africa due to its land expropriation policy, claiming the government practiced racial bias.

Jonas served as deputy finance minister from 2014 to 2017 and stirred controversy in 2020 when he described Trump as a “racist,” “homophobe,” and “narcissistic right-winger” in a speech. Delivered at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, this speech was a criticism of global nationalism and called for cooperation among countries. His past comments have raised questions about his new appointment, especially after they were widely shared when South African journalists brought them to light.

Currently, Jonas is the chairman of MTN Group, a significant telecommunications company with operations in Iran. He has played a crucial role in South Africa’s fight against corruption, famously testifying against former President Jacob Zuma during a well-known judicial inquiry. His new position as special envoy differs from that of an ambassador and will emphasize leading discussions and nurturing strategic relationships with U.S. officials, civic groups, community leaders, and private enterprises.

Even with the existing diplomatic troubles, Jonas pointed out that common areas of interest between the U.S. and South Africa could help to strengthen their historical connections. The U.S. had previously removed South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, due to his critical comments about President Trump. Jonas’ role will be essential in managing this sensitive diplomatic environment as they move ahead.
