Teamsters Union Declines Presidential Endorsement Despite Majority Support for Trump

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, representing 1.3 million workers across the United States and Canada, announced on Thursday, September 19th, that it would not endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential race. This decision breaks a long-standing tradition, as the union has endorsed Democratic candidates since 1992. Despite internal polling showing significant support for former President Donald Trump, the union chose to withhold an endorsement, citing a lack of majority support for both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Teamsters conducted two polls, one online and another by phone, to gauge the political leanings of its members. The results showed Trump leading significantly. In the online poll, 59.6% of respondents supported Trump, while 34% favored Harris. Similarly, the phone survey reported that 58% of respondents backed Trump, with Harris garnering 31%. However, the union stated that while the numbers showed substantial support for Trump, there was no universal backing among the members for either candidate.

Teamsters President Sean O’Brien explained the reasoning behind this unprecedented decision, saying, “The union’s extensive member polling showed no majority support for Vice President Harris and no universal support among the membership for President Trump.” Despite declining to endorse Trump, O’Brien has been seen making inroads with Republicans, including meeting with Trump and addressing the Republican National Convention in July. This marked the first time a Teamsters president spoke at a GOP convention.

Mayor Eric Adams weighed in, praising the union for engaging with both parties while also supporting labor-friendly policies. “The Teamsters’ refusal to endorse shows a commitment to evaluating the candidates on merit,” Adams said. Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom echoed similar sentiments, stating, “This decision underscores the diversity of opinion within the labor movement.” Teamsters’ spokesperson Molly Park added, “While the union may not be endorsing a candidate, it remains committed to representing the Interests of its members.”

The Trump campaign was quick to respond, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying, “The hardworking members of the Teamsters have been loud and clear — they want President Trump back in the White House.” Meanwhile, the Harris campaign highlighted her long-standing support for labor, pointing out that Harris had “literally walked the picket line” and had received endorsements from various Teamsters locals across the country.
